year long.
First, make sure you have adequate and operational
smoke detectors in your home. They can be the first line of
defense by alerting you and your family to the presence of
smoke, which is the leading cause of death in residential
fires.
If you park your car in your garage, you should install
a carbon monoxide (CO) detector inside your home by
the door closest to the garage. CO is an odorless gas that
can quickly lead to unconsciousness, and ultimately,
death. With the increase of cars with keyless ignitions,
CO-related deaths are on the rise nationwide due to people
forgetting to turn off their car after parking in the garage.
Have a plan for escape from your home in the event of
a fire. Include all family members in the planning process
so that everyone, even the children, are aware of what to
do. Decide on a meeting place outside the home to help in
accounting for all family members. Remember, an adult
may become incapacitated, leaving others to rely on their
knowledge of the escape plan.
Please remember to follow good, common sense fire
safety practices at all times to keep yourself, your family
and your home and belongings safe.
