Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Reaches $1 Million Milestone

The Women’s Auxiliary for the Salvation Army of
Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties is celebrating. As
of this month, they have raised more than one million dollars
for the Salvation Army’s local programs and services.
The auxiliary formed in 2000 when Mary Helen Keim
invited a few neighbors in Willoughby Golf Club to her
home for coffee to discuss something near and dear to
her heart – The Salvation Army. At her northern home in
Indianapolis, she had already founded a thriving women’s
auxiliary for the Army that contributed to the development
of a rehabilitation center. She wanted to establish an
      auxiliary here.
“Mary Helen was very convincing that this is the best
organization in the world,” recalls Mimi Boulden of that Mary Helen Keim
first meeting. Boulden, who still lives in Willoughby, is
the last active charter member of the auxiliary that soon formed. “I think we all felt
that we had done a lot for charities (up north) and we got down here and didn’t do
anything and when she confronted us, she made us realize our thinking was bad.”
Keim and her friends immediately began making plans for a fundraiser and pushed
for the development of a new Salvation Army program – a shelter for homeless women
and children. The auxiliary hosted its first Wings of Hope Luncheon, now an annual

Babies Need Diapers – Please Help

       By Beverly Bevis Jones
Diapers are a necessity for every baby and the COVID-19 pandemic has increased
the demand, stated Samantha Suffich, CEO of Martin County Healthy Start Coalition
(MCHSC). “Our diaper pantry program has experienced over a 50 percent increase in
enrollment, and we are struggling to have enough diapers available to meet the demand.”
Their clients are economically challenged in the best of times and with the extreme
economic downturn, the demand has soared. In a normal month, they distribute 4,000
to 6,000 diapers. But in the new reality, they will need more than 10,000 diapers.
Please visit their website at www.mchealthystart.org to make a donation.
In December, the organization relocated their office to a more accessible location on
