articles.
My father, Herman
(Hyman) Kulick was born on August 27, 1889 in Grodno,
Russia. This town was always under siege. One time it
was Russia and one time it was Poland.
My mother’s father (my grandfather) had a very
lucrative business (fixing boilers) which took him to
many countries, both in Europe and the Mideast.
On one occasion, my grandmother was in
Constantinople when my mother was born on December
1, 1898. That made her Turkish by birth.
My grandmother (somewhere along the way) met
another gentleman and moved with him to Argentina,
leaving my grandfather to be both mother and father to
my mother.
My grandfather brought my mother to the United
States when she was seven years old. She attended public
school here and spoke like a true American. After school
was out, my mother would have to help my grandfather
in his laundromat. It was a pretty common thing in those
days.
My father, on the other hand, came to Patterson, New
Jersey when he was 16. His family shipped him here
because there was always some kind of war going on
where he lived. He earned his living working in a silk
mill. Like many foreigners, he saved much of his money
for the day he could go into his own business.
My father and my mother’s families arranged for them
to meet. The result was, naturally, they soon got married.
I will continue in ensuing chapters to reveal the next
part of my life.
Jack Kulick, former Cortina resident.
