“Radical Jewelry Makeover has been a two-year-
long collaborative initiative. We are very excited to
unveil the artful jewelry collection in the new Gallery
and 2-D Studio,” said Lisa Johnson, director of jewelry.
“Collectors looking for unique pieces of wearable art will
feast upon the creative and environmentally conscious
selection. This exhibition consists of 143 pieces of jewelry
that came from approximately 112 donations.”
RJM is an Ethical Metalsmiths’ innovative community
mining project. The work, created by a community of
jewelers, raises awareness of the connection between
mining, metalsmithing, activism, collaboration, and art.
It involves volunteer “miners,” “smelters,” “refiners,”
jewelers, and metalsmiths working together to create a
new and transparent supply chain. RJM relies on local
“mines” – donated jewelry – as a source of “raw” material.
The donated jewelry is then deconstructed to the original
components, and reconstructed into wearable works of art
by artists, students, and jewelers located in South Florida
      and across the U.S.A.
This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of our
beloved Maria Tritico, director of education at the LAC,
artist, metalsmith, and radical jewelry makeover activist.
