To Defy Aging
By Oris Martin, Fitness Director
Acts Retirement Life Communities
As a fitness professional I believe in the benefits of
exercise and the important role it plays in keeping us not
only fit, but healthy. Exercise also helps you continue to
do the things you love, those things that make life worth
living, well into your latter years.
Exercise is not a panacea that covers all things. Here
are some other key components when combined with an
active lifestyle will keep you healthy and active as you age.
1. A healthy diet – Every decade there’s a host of fad
diets that claim to be the only way to lose weight and get
healthy. How do you know when a diet is a good one? A
healthy diet should include lots of vegetables and fruits,
fiber rich carbohydrates, and lean protein. Beware of
diets that eliminate entire food groups, such as no fruits
or carbohydrates or eating from only one food group.
Remember it is possible to lose weight in the short term,
but these diets may not be good for you in the long term.
2. Drinking an adequate amount of water – Water is
an essential nutrient that is involved in numerous body
functions. It affects physical performance, your energy
levels and brain function, relieves constipation and can
help you lose weight. Drinking a glass of water before a
meal helps you to feel full and eat less. How much water
is enough? A good starting point is to aim to consume
half of your bodyweight in ounces of water.
3. Getting enough sleep – Is important for your overall
health. When you’re sleep deprived, your brain is not as
sharp, and it’s more difficult to focus on tasks. It also affects
your physical performance, your blood sugar levels, and
suppresses your immune system, so you’re likely to get
sick more often. Lack of sleep also causes you to gain
weight, because it suppresses two of the hormones that
control appetite – leptin and ghrelin. It is recommended
that healthy adults get seven to nine hours sleep nightly.
4. Relieve Stress – Let’s first acknowledge that it is
impossible to live a life that’s completely stress free. Short
term stress, such as what you experience when you get up
to speak or to perform is not harmful. Prolonged stress
has a negative impact on every system in your body, and
can lead to anxiety, depression, headache, and insomnia.
5. Don’t ignore brain health – Cognitive decline and
dementia are on the rise as people live longer. Maintaining
brain health is dependent on many of the habits that AFFORDABLE & RELIABLE IN-HOME CARE
contribute to overall health, such as a healthy diet, getting
enough sleep and exercise. In addition, challenging yourself
by learning new things, playing games, and doing puzzles Companion Care Personal Care Live-In Care Respite Care
