Are You Listening?
By Judith Levy
So many sounds in nature
are worth listening to, birds
trilling, leaves fluttering,
soft winds embracing you,
so much to hear if you stop
to listen. But, when people
go on and on, that’s when
listening burdens you and
you wish you could close
your ears and turn off the intruding sound.
Don’t ever ask anyone how they feel because they will
tell you, and I mean tell you, on and on. Not just about their
knee, you have to hear about their hip as well and if you don’t
escape at this point, here comes a mouthful of their bridge
that will cost a small fortune to replace. My advice to you is
just to say, “So nice to see you” as a greeting, anything but
“How do you feel?
If the unending diatribe is on the phone, you can escape
by saying, “Forgive me, I just got another call I have to take.”
But if you’re face to face with this wordsmith, you’re stuck.
I’ve been told that anything past twelve words given as a
reply and you can bet the other person has stopped listening.
So, for goodness sake, be brief.
You know the person, the pain in the neck who could
answer in one word or two but chooses to bombard you
with fifty words, that’s the one you try to avoid, especially
when they’re retelling a story for the umpteenth time. You
feel it’s impolite to say, “You’ve told me that story before.”
So, you listen again, and again. Some folks always get stuck
because their heart is in the right place and they feel chances
are these people who prattle on never getting to the point
are lonely, especially in this pandemic time and they need
someone to talk to, and lucky you, they’ve gotten you in their
grasp. If you are a kindhearted person who doesn’t want to
hurt someone’s feelings this scenario will happen to you, but
soon you will start to give this person who goes on and on
a wide berth and you’ll hurry off in another direction.
If you are the talker who speaks endlessly, stop it, you
know they’re not listening anyway, they’re just hoping for you
to take a breath and then they’ll jump in because they were
waiting impatiently to speak so they can tell you their tale.
Don’t be a wind bag, brevity in a speaker, a neighbor, AFFORDABLE & RELIABLE IN-HOME CARE

made a fortune sending brief messages, so my advice to you
is, listen more to the birds, the breeze, the raindrops, and Companion Care Personal Care Live-In Care Respite Care
