                                                                                                              The Jupiter Senior Softball Association’s 2022 Winter
                                                                                                            League began Jan. 3 with a record number of players
                                                                                                            and teams. Teams in the White Division took to the field
                                                                                                            at Jupiter Community Park. Teams in the Red and Blue
                                                                                                            Divisions are to begin play in subsequent days.
                                                                                                              League Commissioner Tom Cosentino said, “We are
                                                                                                            looking forward to another fantastic Winter League.”
                                                                                                            He said the 180 players competing among 14 teams
                                                                                                            is the most ever. Last year there were 158 participants
                                                                                                            on 13 teams. Games are every Monday, Wednesday
                                                                                                            and Friday morning and will continue through March,
                                                                                                            followed by pickup games the remainder of the year.
                                                                                                              The softball program is open to persons 55 and
                                                                                                            older. Tom Salamone, who turns 55 in February, is
                                                                                                            among new players this winter. “It’s been 30 years
                                                                                                            since I picked up a bat and I’m glad I’m back,”
                                                                                                            Salamone said. He retired last year after a 30-year
                                                                                                            career with Pfizer and learned about the senior softball
                                                                                                            league through a friend who connected him with
                                                                                                            League Commissioner Cosentino. The oldest active
                                                                                                            player is Mike Manasia, 89, a pitcher.
                                                                                                              The senior softball program is in its third decade
                                                                                                            and is a cooperative effort of the nonprofit Jupiter
                                                                                                            Senior Softball Association and the Town of Jupiter.
