forces with the MacArthur Foundation and create the
award-winning and mega successful community known
as Abacoa in Jupiter, Fla. There, his vision of a self-
contained, environmentally conscious community with
a small-town flavor became a reality which is enjoyed
by countless families, major league baseball teams, and
institutions of higher learning, which include the first East
Coast location for the famed Scripps Institute.
George was a competitive sailor, having learned at an
early age in Cuba the skill set that he would deploy later
in life to win multiple ocean races in what was known
as the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit, held annually in
the waters off Florida’s coast. In the late 1970s, George
and teammate Mark Soverell, sailing on their yacht
Locura, were picked to represent the United States in
the prestigious worldwide yacht racing tournament
known as The Admiral’s Cup, held in England, where
they were joined by Ted Turner throughout the two-week
tournament.
George has left behind a legacy that includes a strong
love of sports, sport fishing, music and the arts. Later in
life he reconnected with his birth country, Cuba, and was
able to sponsor many Cuban artists and musicians, bringing
them to Miami and creating a better life for them and their
families. He was a passionate and vibrant friend and father.
A celebration of George’s life will be held in later Summer
2023 at National Polo Club in Wellington, Fla.
