Relief In Sight For Our
Declining Dolphin (Mahi
Mahi) Fishery
By Jim Weix
Remember the days
when you could head
offshore and catch a few
nice dolphin on a fairly
regular basis? When I
say “nice,” I’m talking
about fish in the 25-
to 40-pound range, or
larger. Some days you
would actually limit out
on something besides
sandwich sized fish.
I caught the tail end of those days when I moved to
the Treasure Coast in 2001. It has been downhill ever
since. Now the most common “gaffer” size dolphin
is in the 15-pound range, and those seem to be fewer
and fewer.
Finally somebody is taking notice. The South
Atlantic Fishery Management Council is considering
new harvest regulations, particularly when it involves
large-scale commercial longline harvesting that targets
dolphin in the South Atlantic waters. Currently there

AC TUNE-UP affecting the dolphin fishery.
Let’s face it folks, when a dolphin sandwich is on
every restaurant lunch menu from here to Minnesota,
it might indicate too many dolphin are being harvested.
Considering the fact that dolphin is the top-ranked
social and economic recreational fishery resource in
the South Atlantic, worth about $300 million per year,
we need to stop the over harvesting of these fish.
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council
is asking for your input. Meetings were held at the
Hutchinson Island Marriott from June 10 to 14.
