I was motivated to run the article
below when the president recently
reversed the federal government’s policy that had earlier
decided against the use of old incandescent and fluorescent
bulbs in favor of the new, more energy efficient and
environmentally friendly LED bulbs. We offer this article
as a helpful guide to our readers. –NAS)
This is a tip I want to share with others. I know that most
people are familiar with regular screw-in LED bulbs, but
may not be familiar with LED units for typical fluorescent
fixtures.
Some time back, I started replacing 48” fluorescent
bulbs with 48” LED bulbs made by FEIT. Costco had the
best price for them. They were twice as bright as standard
fluorescent bulbs, use less power, and will last almost
forever. My 4-tube fixtures around the house and garage
now have almost all been changed to LED. There are no
special steps needed. Just take out the old fluorescent bulbs,
and put in the LED bulbs.
In a 4-tube fixture, just use 2 LED units; this is brighter
than 4 fluorescent tubes. The other advantage is that they
will last far longer than the old fluorescent bulbs, and use
less power.
If the ballast in a fixture has failed, the LED bulbs will
probably not work. I have several old 4-tube fixtures in the
garage. One of the 2 ballasts failed in one of the fixtures.
So we simply removed all 4 tubes, and put in 2 new LED
bulbs into the 2 slots where the ballast was still good. We
now increased the total brightness, and should not have to
worry about ever changing the bulbs.
