Karen List, a longtime
Komen Florida volunteer, raised $4,651 and was the leader of
the campaign with West Palm Beach Police Department officer
Kassandra Placeres (who shaved her head on camera to show
support for her sister who is battling the disease) taking home
second place and raising $2,684. Pamela Abbott, director of
patient financial services at Bethesda Hospital of Baptist Health
South Florida took home third place and raised $2,250.
“We are incredibly grateful to all of our BigWigs
who helped us raise money and awareness during their
campaigns,” said Kate Watt, Susan G. Komen Florida
executive director. “Each day we meet women and men
who are fighting this disease and putting on a brave face. We
know firsthand the effects of a breast cancer diagnosis. We
also know that early detection is key in beating this disease.
While wearing pink wigs is fun, our main goal is to encourage
everyone to get screened and to stay on top of their health.”
List, Placeres and Abbott were not alone during
the BigWigs campaign. Other community supporters
participating in the campaign from all across the state
included: Lt. Patricia Brown, Anne Todd, David Hubert,
Eden Weiss, Chief Michael Gregory, Luke Pingleton,
Zachariah Merschdorf, Patricia Gardner, Shawntoia
Bernard, Leemen Weaver, Pamela Williams, Lee Morris,
David Lickstein, Tim and Chelsea from New Country
103.1, Kate Watt, Michelle McGovern, and Kiwi Lindsey.
In addition to their fundraising efforts, these BigWigs
spent their time encouraging friends and colleagues to help
promote lifesaving screening, treatment and education
services that Komen provides throughout Florida.
Together, the BigWigs’ combined fundraising totaled
$28,525.65.
