I think of her words now as we struggle to deal with
the new “normal.” There will be changes that emerge from
these dire events and modifications in the way we do things.
We might not like the new normal at first but life-altering
incidents bring about change, whether we like it or not. Even
now, through this transition, you can begin to see some good
things happening. Families are spending more time together
and actually sitting down to dinner. A friend told me that
she has taken time to get to know and understand her son
like never before. Without this pause it would never have
happened.
It’s as if the world has stopped. The pulse is still beating
but to a different drum; one that forces us to slow down
and take stock of what matters. Even with the distancing
and stay-at-home orders, people have reached out to family
and friends more often now, albeit virtually. Since we
have nothing but time and nowhere to go, we can tap our
creativity and/or productivity.

you can prepare meals that taste good too!
The planet has also found relief from the proliferation
and abuse of human kind. India saw blue skies for the first
time in years, pollution cleared the air in China so people
could breathe, and Venice canals spawned jellyfish which
had long disappeared. It’s as though we’ve all been given
a wake-up call, or, more appropriately from my column’s
tag line, a reality check.
