was sidelined last year by
heavy flooding, which was preceded by the tragic pre-
show crash of Dr. Joseph Masessa. The Stuart Air Show
is returning to the skies Nov. 7 and 8.
This year, in addition to assembling rare aerial military
performers, we will be honoring the memory of air show
performer, Dr. Joseph Masessa, who passed away when
his plane crashed at Witham Field hours before the 2019
show was set to start.
The show’s featured fighter jets are air combat aircraft
that have not performed at the same event in the United
States for the last eight years, making this year’s lineup
truly something special. In addition to the U.S. Air Force

Team, spectators will enjoy the A-10 “Thunderbolt II”
Demo Team, F-16 “Viper” Demo Team, F-22 “Raptor”
Demo Team, and F-35 “Lightning II” Demo Team.
Not all the excitement will be exclusively in the
air! Stuart Air Show patrons will get to experience an
incredible Freestyle Motocross (FMX) show, which will
include a motorcycle jumping over a moving aircraft.
There will be three FMX shows each day: two on the
crowd’s side of the air field and one on the tarmac. The
three FMX performers will be Cody Elkins, TJ Tiffany,
and Jerad LaRue. The “Race the Runway 5K” is back
by popular demand, allowing runners the chance to race
through Martin County Airport in the hours before the
show on Sunday, Nov. 8. Runners will watch the sunrise
over the show’s aircraft in this special experience. 747-PALM
“The Masessa family looks forward to being able to
memorialize him at this special event,” says Jeff Masessa, 747-7256
Dr. Masessa’s brother. “Stuart will always be home to
Joe; it’s his final resting place.”
A dermatologist with offices around the state, including
Martin and St. Lucie counties, Dr. Masessa cherished the “Service is our number one priority”
chance to appear in the Stuart Air Show and harbored a
profound appreciation for America and the military. The 561-743-0070
exterior of his aircraft bore the names of more than 1,600
soldiers missing or captured during the Vietnam War. The www.palmspoolservices.com
Stuart Air Show is paying homage to Masessa this year in
many ways, including through a newly redesigned logo
that includes his 1968 Grumman OV-1 Mohawk.
“It’s been a deeply emotional journey bringing the air
show to its 30th anniversary celebration,” says Stuart
Air Show Board President, Amy Bottegal. “Of all the
difficulties—flooding so bad it forced cancellation of
both days, funding challenges, scheduling issues, finally
the COVID crisis—nothing comes close to affecting our
air show family as profoundly as losing Joe.”
During the past 6 months, the Stuart Air Show has been
monitoring the COVID-19 virus. Air show leadership
has consulted closely with health professionals from
the Martin County Health Department and other health-
industry experts. This year’s show will incorporate safety Expires 10/31/20.
