Abacoa Community Garden
On Saturday, Oct. 3,
the Abacoa Community
Garden conducted its
fall season kickoff. We
harvested the last of the
jicama, dug up all the sweet
potatoes that were growing
over the summer, planted
collards, peas and basil,
plus we began prepping
beds for the next round
of plantings. Above and
beyond the planting and
harvesting, members enjoyed testing out our new sugar
cane press. The hand press extracted the raw juice from
the sugar cane stalks that were growing in the garden.
Some members tasted the freshly pressed juice, which is
not at all sweet, and others took it home to cook it down
into a sweet syrup. ASSET ADVISORY SERVICES
The sugar cane in the garden originally came from
a small piece from a member’s tour of a sugar field.
They brought the small piece back and planted it in the Crafting nancial Solutions with Insight and Integrity Since 1980
children’s garden. Sugar cane grows fast and is easy to
propagate, so it soon outgrew the children’s bed. Hence Although 2020 has been a year of unexpected changes,
the sugar cane had to be moved where it can thrive. Now, one routine has remained consistent: the fourth quarter
means it’s time to ensure that all year-end nancial and tax
