                                                                                                            the six cobias in the area.”
                                                                                                              Some anglers avoid this congestion, by sight fishing
                                                                                                            for cobia. They take the “run and gun” approach, going to
                                                                                                            wherever they see floating structure or Manta rays. Others
                                                                                                            will cruise close to shore, as cobia will cruise shallow
                                                                                                            water.
                                                                                                              A popular bait is a two to eight ounce jig, with a white
                                                                                                            and chartreuse bucktail. Add squid or an 8-inch Gulp! You
                                                                                                            can also simply use a slip sinker with a whole squid on a
                                                                                                            hook.
                                                                                                              I like the “run and gun” method if the seas are calm and
                                                                                                            there aren’t a bunch of other anglers doing the same thing.
                                                                                                            However, my favorite method is to fish the many lesser-
                                                                                                            known reefs. Fighting crowds at places like Sandpile and
                                                                                                            Bull Shark Reef is just not my thing. Instead, I plug in
                                                                                                            GPS coordinates found at https://www.martin.fl.us/Reefs.
                                                                                                              Almost any type of structure can hold cobia, so even
                                                                                                            a small structure works. I will drop a squid down with a
                                                                                                            slip sinker. I will also cast with a jig at the same time, so
                                                                                                            I can work the whole structure.
                                                                                                              Along with that, I drop a line just beneath the boat.
                                                                                                            Cobia are curious and to them your boat is just another
                                                                                                            piece of floating structure.
