and other fish, they are not too proud to settle for scraps
left behind by feeding bull sharks. Popular spots to fish
near Stuart are the “Sandpile” and “Bull Shark Reef.”
Unfortunately these two spots can become a real circus.
As one friend noted when we fished the Sandpile: “You
got 70 boats and 16 divers with spears, all hoping to get
the six cobias in the area.”
Some anglers avoid this congestion, by sight fishing
for cobia. They take the “run and gun” approach, going to
wherever they see floating structure or Manta rays. Others
will cruise close to shore, as cobia will cruise shallow
water.
A popular bait is a two to eight ounce jig, with a white
and chartreuse bucktail. Add squid or an 8-inch Gulp! You
can also simply use a slip sinker with a whole squid on a
hook.
I like the “run and gun” method if the seas are calm and
there aren’t a bunch of other anglers doing the same thing.
However, my favorite method is to fish the many lesser-
known reefs. Fighting crowds at places like Sandpile and
Bull Shark Reef is just not my thing. Instead, I plug in

Almost any type of structure can hold cobia, so even
a small structure works. I will drop a squid down with a
slip sinker. I will also cast with a jig at the same time, so
I can work the whole structure.
Along with that, I drop a line just beneath the boat.
Cobia are curious and to them your boat is just another
piece of floating structure.
