pop music. Finding interactive ways for American Jews to
connect to their fellow Jews in Israel is always exciting.
Fortunately, there are more ways than ever before because
Israel’s vibrant culture complements Jewish life here
in America. Just like American Judaism has influenced
culture and even Jewish practice in Israel, Israel has greatly
influenced Jewish life here in America.
Israel has brought together Jewish food traditions from
the ingathering of Jews from all over the world, thereby
introducing Jews to a wider menu of Jewish cuisine.
Sefardi, Ashkenazi, European, and Middle Eastern foods
are common in Israel, so much so that the average Israeli
menu has been enhanced by global Jewish communities. So
too, Israeli music incorporates the sounds of East and West,
ancient Hebrew, and the modern rhythms that have impacted
Jewish music here in America. The biblical notion of the
ingathering of exiles has led to a more colorful celebration
of Jewish life and culture that we here in Florida can enjoy
today, something that was not available to many of our
ancestors.
Israel reminds us that much of what we consider reality
today was once considered impossible. Theodore Herzl
famously said regarding his vision of what would one
day become Israel, “If you will it, it is no dream.” The
joy in having a homeland in the ancient Land of Israel is
both a responsibility and a privilege that so many earlier
generations prayed for. May Israel inspire us and encourage Temple Beth Am Sisterhood members enjoy lunch together
us to dream big and may God protect Israel and bless Israel at Dubois Park.
