its population swelled to 250,000. St. Paul arrived in 53
A.D. to spread the word, and gained enough followers to
establish the first Christian church. His efforts did not go
without opposition … not from opposing religious interest,
but rather from the secular community. It seems as though
the jeweler Demetrius’ lucrative business of selling silver
idols of Artemis was at stake. This led to a showdown
in the theater, where shortly thereafter Paul headed for
Macedonia. Even without Paul, the religion had taken root
and eventually supplanted the worship of Artemis. St. John
later moved to the city and died there (37–48 A.D.).
In 260 A.D., the Goths destroyed the city and temple.
Under Seljuk and Byzantine rule, Ephesus gradually declined
and became deserted. The real cause of this decline is believed
to be the silting of the harbor, halting navigation. At the same
time, Istanbul and Smyrna were rising to prominence in the
3rd and 4th centuries. Ephesus retained its position in the
church affairs, as was shown by no less than six councils that The Library of Celsus
were held there. For some time in the Middle Ages, Ephesus
and Miletus, farther down the coast, continued to rival each
other as a gateway to the interior districts.
Most of the surviving ruins of Ephesus belong to the LET US HELP YOU

symbol of Ephesus is the façade of the Library of Celsus.

from the very famous Library of Celsus, was the brothel. LOCATION
It was connected to the library by a short tunnel. As the
legends go, the men of the city spent many hours going to
the library after dinner for “enlightenment.” It’s possible that
some may have used this tunnel. The way that the brothel
was identified by archeologists was by carvings found in
the marble slabs that pave the streets. A simple footprint
carved in the pavement pointed the way to the facility …
it pays to advertise.
Ephesus is one of the most impressive and best-preserved
archaeological sites in the world – it is unique by its
preeminence as well as its long rich history.
