belts originate in the southern region, but high-quality
leather can be found everywhere. They produce ornate
handmade lace and intricate embroidery mainly in the
northeast. The Amazon region’s artisans create wonderful
handcrafted jewelry, utensils and decorative weapons.
No shopping trip would be complete for the female sun
worshiper without a tanga or two – that daring, “barely
there” (dental floss) bikini worn by the carioca women
– or maybe a kanga, which is a large and colorful beach
cover-up.
Brazil’s 4,650 miles of coastline have some of the
best known stretches of sand beaches in the world. Rio
de Janeiro has more than 50 miles of the most beautiful
beaches. Most famous is Copacabana, with its clean
beautiful white sand that abuts a city featuring an eye-
pleasing mosaic sidewalk crafter in the image of rolling
waves. Leme Beach separates Copacabana from Ipanema,
the most elegant of Rio’s beaches, which Tom Jobim
immortalized with the song, The Girl from Ipanema.
Brazil’s inability to assure travelers a secure environment
has hampered it from emerging as a great travel destination.
However, it is truly a nation filled with a diversity of
environments and cultures that all should enjoy.
