The events in Paris during the next four centuries is perhaps
as familiar to us Americans as it is to the French. The Parisian
militant, Charles V, constructed the infamous Bastille fortress.
In 1407, the Duke of Burgundy had the Duke of Orleans
murdered – an act that led to the 12-year war between the
Burgundians and Armagnacs. The carnage ended with the
English capturing Paris in 1420. Joan of Arc failed to liberate
Paris 10 years later, and Henry VI of England was crowned Changing the way we

Still more problems occurred for Paris, where in 1466,
the plague took thousands of Parisians. About a century
later, the religious wars wreaked havoc, including the St.
Bartholomew’s Day massacre, and culminating in the 1569
siege of the city by Henry of Navarre.
Things finally got better under King Louis XIII, who
brought fashion to Paris. He also founded various other
institutions, such as the Royal Printing Press and Académie
française. His successor, King Louis XIV, the Sun King, moved
his court out of the city to Versailles.
Come the revolution, as we often say, things will be
different, and this was also true in Paris. The people revolted
against poor living conditions and high taxes. The French
Revolution actually followed ours here in the states. It
