to help create solid foundations for families in our
community. During the “Call to the Heart,” the Helga
Marston Charitable Foundation trustee, Bernadine Atkins,
mother of Stephen Atkins, gala cochair, generously
donated $100,000 to go towards building a new Habitat
home in our area. The cost to build one Habitat home
is $150,000. So, guests of the event collectively gave
another $56,000 for one house to be built for another
local family.
“We are incredibly grateful to Bernadine Atkins and the
Helga Marston Charitable Foundation for their generosity
to our mission,” said Bernie Godek, CEO of Habitat for

Wine Is A Universal
Language…
By Laura Berrio, Freelance Writer/Blogger
When I was in my early 30s
I embarked on a backpacking
trip through Europe with a
friend. Although backpacking
only described my luggage of
choice (I stayed in hotels and
ate well!).
One stop on our adventure
was Bruges, Belgium. We
stayed in a quaint bed and
breakfast owned by a couple
that only spoke Flemish. In
playing charades to try and communicate, they pointed to
two bicycles and then in the direction of town.
It was dusk as we rode under the large arc of the city gate. It
was like something out of an American Express commercial.
We were entering a different time and place. The cobblestone
streets were lined with buildings and churches from the 12th
century. I realized nothing I would ever see at home would
seem old again!
We found a restaurant that all the locals were heading to
for dinner. The line was wrapped around the square and we
gathered from the group that it was at least a two-hour wait.
Happy Then something unexpected happened. The owner, a big,
boisterous man, that was also the chef, came over to us and
pointed to a table in the middle of the open-air restaurant.
Holidays He was cooking in what looked like a huge fireplace. To
our delight he sent a waiter over with a bottle of Cabernet
Sauvignon. We noticed that every time a table was served
wine, all the waiters and the owner would cheer and take a
from drink. This was a very happy and tipsy staff!
We sat back with our glass of Cabernet and just enjoyed
the ambiance. The chef would cut a piece of everything he
was cooking for various patrons, and put it in front of us. To
561.500.2020 this day, I can’t tell you what we ate.
The food and the wine were perfect, but the best part was

All these years later, I think of this night every time I have a
