Creative Quarantine Bas
Mitzvah for Rabbi’s Daughter
By Rabbi Dovid and Chana Vigler
This summer we had the great blessing of celebrating
our daughter Etti’s bas mitzvah. This was a tremendous
milestone Etti has been looking forward to for a long time
and we were determined to honor her and the day precisely
when she became a Jewish woman, on her birthday. Etti
has always been a creative and out-of-the-box personality,
so it was no sweat to change everything we ever thought
a bas mitzvah is and turn it into something uniquely Etti!
Upon arrival, guests received a video sent to their
phones where Etti was able to greet each one and welcome
them herself. She then proceeded to guide each car as they
journeyed on from station to station. She explained that
as we were celebrating by car procession, we were each
travelers. That is so interesting because chassidus tells us
that that is precisely what life is about. Being upon this
earth is merely a visit we are passing through. We are not
here to collect physical possessions — rather, spiritual
valuables, Torah, and good deeds that remain with us
forever.
Carrying that message, the first booth had Sholom and
Berke handing out beautiful travelers’ prayers to be kept
in your purse or car and to be recited upon embarking on
long journeys. They also handed out small charity boxes
to remain in each car.
Filling our cars with mitzvos helps keep us safe. The
following booth had Moussia helping guests fill
out cards to be placed in Etti’s guest book for
safekeeping. The beautiful pen with Etti’s emblem
was theirs to keep. The procession then headed
toward Racheli and Rivkah, who provided each
passerby with a beautiful book titled “What is a Bat
Mitzvah,” written and illustrated by Chana Vigler,
Etti Vigler, and our dear friend Sarita Seidl.
And last, the final stop was meeting the bat
mitzvah girl herself and taking a social distanced
photo with her. There was festive music and
everyone received a gift box filled with goodies
in honor of the bat mitzvah.
It turned out to be exactly what Etti needed!
