I can tell you firsthand that the generosity of this Photo credit: Tom

nimble, quickly mobilize resources, and make an
immediate and long-lasting difference in the lives of
countless people. Right this minute, our community is
helping our brothers and sisters in Israel grapple with
the aftermath of some of the most extreme violence
they have seen in years. Israelis we spoke with are also
frustrated about misinformation, and they’re deeply
anxious about the rise of anti-Israel and antisemitic
activity.
This trip allowed me to personally witness how
Federation and our global partners — such as the Jewish
Federations of North America (JFNA), The Jewish
Agency for Israel (JAFI), and the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee (JDC) — provide emergency
assistance to those who are in crisis.
• I toured Ashkelon and saw the remains of homes
destroyed by bombings and fire.
• I watched as those families received emergency
cash assistance to find temporary housing and food,
because of the generosity of communities like ours.
• I heard tragic first-person accounts from the adults
and children who survived the violence bearing few
physical scars, but tremendous emotional scars.
• I saw resilience centers opening all over the
country, staffed by mental health professionals trained
in dealing with post-traumatic stress.
• I witnessed the efforts to open 24-hour phone
hotlines, which operate in five languages, to handle the
specific issues faced by the vast new immigrant (olim)
populations from Ethiopia, Europe, and South America.
These were powerful experiences that I will never
forget.
A special note: The issues of the conflict in Israel
and the rise of antisemitism in the U.S. are on the
minds of many of us at this time. Jewish Federation
has compiled a list of resources to help you understand
and discuss this complicated situation as well as how
to best respond to antisemitism when you encounter it.
