has been a part of the festival ever since, even though
the Portuguese maintain that the “relic” returned was
actually a reproduction of the actual tooth.
Sri Dalada Mligawa (or the Temple of the Tooth)
is the current resting place for this relic. It rests on a
gold lotus-leaf mount that is placed on a solid silver
table. It is shrouded by a golden bell-shaped cover
that is studded with jewels … all of this is in a cool
dark room protected by a wall of glass from floor to
ceiling. The bell cover protects the tooth from all eyes
except those of kings and other high personages. The
“Emerald of Kandy,” known the world over for its size
and luster, hangs from the tail feather of a solid silver
peacock that stands over the shrine.
For all those world travelers who believe that they
have “seen that, done that,” I suggest a visit to Sri
Lanka. It’s sure to be an entirely new experience.
