NOVEL ROLE FOR ‘SKIN
PLUMPING’ MOLECULE
Ning Quan, Ph.D., a neuroscientist at Florida
Atlantic University’s Brain Institute and Schmidt
College of Medicine discovered that hyaluronic acid
may be the key in how an immune signal moves
from the blood stream to the brain, activating
the brain’s resident immune cells, the microglia.
Findings from this study have important implications
for better treatments for stroke, neurodegenerative
diseases, as well as head injuries.

What Can a Blind Fish Teach
Us About Sleep?
Frontiers for Young Minds recently published an article written
by Alexandra Paz, a second-year Integrative Biology and
Neuroscience (IBAN) student at FAU Jupiter. “What Can a Blind
Fish Teach Us About Sleep?” explores the various experiments
that can be conducted using cavefish and why these experiments
might be useful for humans. The journal allows young students to
learn directly from the scientists that are conducting the research.
Top of the Class
Palm Beach Illustrated selected Laura Vernon, Ph.D., associate
dean of academic affairs and research of FAU’s Harriet L. Wilkes
Honors College as a finalist for the Educator of the Year award.
Dr. Vernon is featured in this month’s issue that recognizes
individuals and organizations making an impact on education
in the Palm Beaches. The annual awards program will be held
Friday, September 20 at the Norton Museum of Art.
FAU Jupiter Move-In Day
A diverse body of high-achieving students moved into the FAU
Jupiter campus this fall. With the dorms at capacity, about
30 students are being accommodated at the Courtyard by
Marriott. The incoming FAU Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College
class includes 11 National Merit Finalists. The average GPA is
4.16. The average SAT score is 1300, and the average ACT score
is 28.8. Approximately 25% are the first in their family to attend
college, and 62% are from underrepresented groups.
2019 Summer Science
Scholarship
FAU Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College students Heather Butler,
Karla Holt, and Pierce Herrmann presented their research at
Scripps Research Institute, Friday, Aug. 9th, during the annual
summer research program poster session. These students are
among the ten recipients of the 2019 Summer Science Scholarship.
This summer $22,000 in scholarships were awarded to ten students
in support of student research on the Jupiter campus.

Research Fellowship (SURF)
Presentations
FAU Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College Summer Undergraduate
Research Fellowship (SURF) awardees Gabrielle Byrd, Hope
Wiersma, Claudia Villasmil and Alyssa Payne presented their
projects during the FAU Undergraduate Research and Inquiry
(OURI) 7th Annual Summer Retreat on Aug. 15. SURF projects are
ten-week, intensive summer immersion research experiences for
FAU undergraduate students. Each SURF award allocates $4,000
in support of each chosen project.
ACI Graduation
Congratulations to Deanna, Jeremy, Marina, Robyn and
service dogs Roxy and Clay, the Academy for Community
Inclusion (ACI) students graduated alongside their peers
during the College of Education summer graduation
ceremony. ACI is a higher education program for students
with intellectual disabilities.
